Fall 2025 | Family Photo Outfits

Looking back at all the years of family photos I can say while it was such a pain to coordinate calendars, purchase outfits and attempt for everyone to look at the camera at the same time (yeah right) I don’t regret doing them. Having these moments in time captured of our family is precious so let me help you with what I find the most stressful… OUTFITS!

This year we again will be in another new location, Albuquerque NM! September and October tends to be super busy for us so we tend to do our pictures later in the season but having lived in a place where the leaves actually turn I know there is maybe a 2 week window to catch the best trees colors! In reality most families take pictures whenever they can make schedules align for everyone which can be from early September through the holidays (hello New Year’s cards)!

To help take off some of the stress I have once again put together 9 color schemes with outfits for mom, dad and kids of all ages. Also if you have an older teen/ young adult I don’t do a ton of those separate for males because they can easily dip into the “guys” options, teen girls tend to have a bit different style than mom.

Now, onto those outfit ideas!!

I love this neutral color scheme if you are doing your family photos in the fall, but maybe on a beach or an open field. Playing off the colors of the tan grass or even like my kids did a few years ago in a studio, these all look so lovely together then, with some pops of soft pink and sea greens.

I’m a big fan of a “traditional” fall color palette and this year we are seeing even darker tones of burgundy, olive and chocolate brown. I also do several variations of this color palette because it’s what you can find right now in stores! There is nothing I hate more than families picking a color palette no one can find anything in. Here are some great options for 2025.

While we have done a few colors schemes in fall I LOVE all the deep rich tones of caramel, greens and reds that look amazing surrounded by turning leaves (if you have that in your area)!

Since half my family has green eyes I always love a green option! This year we are seeing several shades from sage to deep olive. Nearly all greens look good with brown, tan and pops of navy. This year I did a lighter option adding in more creams and a 2nd option with more moody chocolate browns.

Last year I also got requests for more “blue” options and I get it! No matter the season or location it’s an easy color palette to pull from your closet then grab a few items for those kiddos that outgrew whatever they had in their closet. This year sage is also trending so it’s a great way to mix in a brighter blue. The other option is mix in more grey and tan with navy for a more moody blue palette.

Every year I also like to give a more “dressy” option it’s espically great if you are doing photos in a studio or home where dressing up is a little easier. This year I leaned into browns!! From chocolate, caramel, beige and cream it’s basically a dessert of colors and so darn yummy!

Hope you love these outfit pairings and a few last tips!

Bring snacks (like the excellent candy kinds for when kids meltdown…Smarties that melt but don’t get everywhere are great). Remember to take individual photos of each family member; these are great for work headshots or when you need that pic of just one kid. Have FUN but even when a kid is having a meltdown don’t worry about it, those pictures end up being my favs! Miss A in toddler meltdown mode.. but don’t worry a few snacks and she was all better.
